Ayurveda is just like the Fab 5..

Now hear me out… I know this may sound like a stretch, but really, the work the Fab Five does on Queer Eye is powerful. It’s serious work, it’s big, and most importantly it gets to the root of the problem-JUST LIKE AYURVEDA. They don’t just come in and change everything around the client, they work with them, meet them where they are, and really get to the heart of the issue. As does Ayurveda.

First they come to the client’s house, and get to know them. They poke their nosey little selves into every nook and cranny to get a holistic idea of who this person really is. Antoni starts in the kitchen and tries to get an idea of what this person’s relationship is with cooking and with food. As your Ayurvedic counselor- guess what, we’re gonna Antoni the shit out of the kitchen. Not just to see if you’re being “healthy”, because come on y’all it’s 2022, health is not a one size fits all. But what is your relationship to your kitchen? Do you enjoy being in there? Do you cook foods you love? Do you enjoy eating? <<Are you paying attention when eating.. or perhaps propped up in front of netflix..>> What is your relationship to this sacred space, and sacred time? And the goal here isn’t to make you enjoy kale, I promise you it’s not, the goal is to find something that you love and to really enjoy the whole experience of nourishing yourself.

Then there’s JVN and Tan France. Now you may reaaally begin to doubt my theory here because what on earth does your hair and your personal clothing style have to do with this ancient holistic approach to health? Wellll let me tell you. How you see yourself, how you present yourself, how you feel about the way you look- this is Ayurveda. This is about being comfortable in your own skin, being confident in the person you are today, and not “should-ing” all over yourself, or wishing you still looked like you did when… Learning to love yourself NOW, in the body you have is essential Ayurveda.

Then there’s Bobbi. My feng shui king. Now this is something that many might not know about Ayurveda. There is an entire branch of Ayurveda called vasthu all about how the energy in your home feels. Like the more well known interior approach known as feng shui there are some rules, but modern day Ayurveda is more about how you care for your space, and how this actually reflects how you care for yourself. Does the home represent who you are? Is it clear, is it organized, can you function in your space the way you’d like? You don’t need to revamp your whole space as Bobbi does, but what can you spruce up, what can you let go of (..that no longer sparks joy- Marie Kondo anyone??), and what can you bring in to brighten up your space to make it feel more like.. home and yourself! This may be my secret Ayurvedic weapon. I always feel so much lighter when I purge my closet, rearrange my space, or bring in some seasonal pieces.

And finally.. there’s Karamo. My man. You know he does the real dirty work. He gets right to the heart of the issue, what is it that is holding you back, what are the blocks. He finds that pain point and works with you to help digest it. These life experiences, as painful as they may be, these are truly the gifts. This is what I love the most about Ayurveda. It believes that your emotions and your experiences all impact your health. And we have the opportunity to process and digest this pain into true healing.

So while I may not have quiiite the same je ne se quoi as the fab five, I’d like to think I have a similar approach. It’s different than what you may be used to when it comes to wellness, and I may not be able to get the same results in just one week of working together! But I believe if you are willing to open your perspective, zhuzh things up a bit, and commit to the process you will most certainly see results and be much more in alignment with who you’ve always known yourself to be.
